Teacher Content Training provides math and science professional development for teachers, especially those in lower performing school districts. It is designed to help improve teacher capacity and in turn enhance student skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

To implement Teacher Content Training, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) sponsors math and science professional development institutes across the state. These trainings involve experts from non-profits organizations, educational collaboratives, school districts, and higher education institutions. Topics include subject specific math and science courses, such as Geometry, Algebra, and Physics, and general topics such as scientific writing and mathematical reasoning. DESE evaluates teacher participants and found that 90 percent of teachers involved in 2012-2013 made gains on content knowledge.

Funding for teacher professional development in math and science through this line item fell dramatically in recent years. In FY 2007, teacher content training reached 1,000 educators through 33 specialized training courses. By FY 2013, funding levels supported only 275 teachers taking 12 training courses. Of the participants in 2012-2013, 60 percent served students with disabilities and 30 percent work with English Language Learners. Teacher Content Training was completely cut from the budget in FY 2017.

Teacher Content Training fits under the wider Massachusetts STEM plan, an effort to improve engagement of our state’s youth in STEM fields throughout their educational careers. Improving STEM engagement and mastery aims to help more Massachusetts students pursue and succeed in STEM opportunities that are a growing part of our state economy as well as being high-demand in the job market.
