K-12 Administration (Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education)

State government performs important administrative and regulatory duties in order to ensure smooth functioning of local school districts in accordance with state law and standards. The Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE) distributes education aid in accordance with the Chapter 70 law and awards and monitors many other individual grant programs designed to advance priority initiatives. Additionally, DESE oversees teacher licensure, administration of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), charter school authorization and monitoring, and adult and community learning services.

In 2008, the legislature created the Executive Office of Education to have comprehensive oversight of the state's educational system birth through college, with the Department of Early Education and Care, the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, and the Department of Higher Education all coming under its purview.
