This line item funds the administration of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

The state education agency is responsible for overseeing the administration and regulation of local school districts, in accordance with state law and standards. DESE distributes education aid in accordance with the education funding law (Chapter 70), and awards and monitors many other individual grant programs designed to advance priority initiatives. Additionally, DESE oversees a wide range of ongoing programs including teacher licensure, administration of state achievement tests, school meals, charter schools, and adult and community learning services.

Funding for DESE was reduced from $14.4M to $12.5M through a mid-year cut of $1.9M to the FY 2017 budget.
