Chapter 70 and Other Education Local Aid

The state provides revenue support for local school districts through a few different programs, with Chapter 70 aid being by far the largest. While Chapter 70 aid provides unrestricted general operating support, many of the others are designed to reimburse costs associated with specific programs such as constructing and renovating school buildings, transporting students in regional school districts, and funding charter school tuitions.

These reimbursement programs often have the effect of serving as general state revenue support for local school districts since money reimbursing one activity frees up money otherwise spent to fund others.
